History
The story of the most famous avenue in the world started
in 1616. At this time there were only fields ("Champs" in French) after the
Tuileries Garden and Marie de Medici decided the creation of an avenue of trees.
In just a few decades the Champs Elysees was lined with mansions and shops. By
the late 18th century, the avenue had become one of the most fashionable in
Paris. The Champs Elysées avenue runs from the Place de la Concorde - where King
Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were executed - up to the Arch of Triumph
built by Napoleon to celebrate his victories and honour the memory of fallen
soldiers.
