History

The Louvre was first a fortress built by Philip II in the 12th century. A part of this medieval Louvre is still visible in the basement of the museum. King Charles V and decades later King Francis 1st enlarged the building, which was turned into a museum in August 1793. By 1874, the Louvre Museum had reached its present size. Built in 1988 in the main court, the glass pyramid, which is today the main entrance, was conceived by Chinese American architect Ieoh Ming Pei..
